Being a family owned, family operated company is extremely important for multiple reasons. I’m not going to lie and say it has all been kicks and giggles since we formed the company, it hasn’t. Creating a good company is difficult enough as it is. Adding the fact that you are working with your family with emotions involved, the challenge can be overwhelming. Yet, at the end of the day, working for my brother has been one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had in my life. There are a few aspects of the company that have been especially important to me in my pursuit of business endeavors, and reasons why a family owned, family operated company can be such a benefit to our customers.
Taylor Smith, owner of Savor Sleep/ Miracle Wedge has taught me the incredible importance of quality in a family owned, family operated business. This point has been more exemplified in the company’s work than in Mr. Smith’s words. I continue to find myself amazed at the quality of memory foam implemented in our products. When beginning working for our company around 2 years ago, I didn’t even know memory foam like our’s existed. It is literally the most soft, perfect memory foam I have ever felt/used. Taylor assured me that this was only possible due to two key points:
- It’s made in America: American made products, for the majority of the time, are usually much better quality products. This is especially true with memory foam. When making the unfortunate mistake of buying quote/unquote “memory foam” from other countries, you are running the risk of bringing hundreds of harmful toxins into your home with the material. This is especially true with China.
- Arm’s length, quality control: I have never seen an owner so focused on quality control then that of Taylor Smith. He is constantly making sure his inventory is made to exact specifications of size, shape, and feel of the material. Having constant communication with manufacturing, nothing seems to get past our company if it does not meet Miracle Wedge standards.
It goes without saying- loving family members are infinitely more loyal to a company. For me, I not only want to make the company as successful and helpful as possible because of the love for my brother, but also want to make him proud of me. I love hearing from my older brother that he was proud of my hard work in growing the business. We share a very special relationship, and working for the company has allowed me grow closer to my family. Hands down, the work produced by an employee who is related to a company owner is usually going to be considerably better than that of an employee who is simply working for a paycheck. While there are always exceptions to this rule, it is usually the case. A family owned, family operated business usually has more loyalty- especially in our case.
Being raised from a religious, morally grounded family, we have learned the importance of honesty and integrity in business. My grandfather, who was an astounding businessman, used to have a quote that went,” If a man’s not honest, he’s nothing.” A man of few words, he certainly got the point across with that statement. Passed on to me by my father, that quote has stuck with me ever since I was a child. This has translated into being a key asset to our business success. Plain and simply, people know we can be trusted so they want to do business with us. Companies with integrity are the only ones who survive long term.
One of the greatest aspects to working for my brother’s company is the amount of mentorship I have gained from working under his wing. Taylor is been in the commerce business for years, having faced countless challenges, setbacks, and rewards as well. His experiences have not only allowed him to grow as a businessman, but also to teach me the ropes of owning your own company. I could have NEVER imagined how difficult running a business could be. No matter which way you approach a business, difficulties and setbacks will be inevitable if you stay in the race. However, my hands-on learning experience has been invaluable. It has not only allowed me the opportunity to apply everything he has taught me into Savor Sleep, but also have a great knowledge base for my future business.
